Summer Skin Survival Guide: Protecting Your Skin in the Heat

Summer Skin Survival Guide: Protecting Your Skin in the Heat

Summer is here — and with it comes longer days, warmer temperatures, and more time spent outdoors. While the sunshine does wonders for our mood and vitamin D levels, it can be a real challenge for our skin. Heat, UV exposure, humidity, and chlorine can all take their toll, leaving skin dehydrated, congested, or sun-damaged if we're not careful.

The good news? A few simple adjustments to your routine can keep your skin healthy, glowing, and protected all summer long.

The Non-Negotiable: Sun Protection

Let's start with the most important step. UV radiation is the single biggest cause of premature skin ageing — responsible for up to 80% of visible signs of ageing, including wrinkles, pigmentation, and loss of elasticity. And yet, sun protection remains one of the most overlooked steps in many people's routines.

For summer, aim for a broad-spectrum SPF 30 or higher, applied every morning as the last step in your skincare routine — and reapplied every two hours if you're spending time outdoors. Look for mineral formulations containing zinc oxide or titanium dioxide for a gentler, more skin-friendly option.

Lighten Up Your Routine

Just as we swap heavy coats for light linen in summer, our skincare needs to adapt too. Heavy creams that served you well in winter can feel suffocating in the heat, potentially clogging pores and contributing to breakouts.

Switch to lighter formulations — a water-based moisturiser, a lighter facial oil, or simply a few drops of a fast-absorbing botanical oil applied to damp skin for a burst of hydration without heaviness. Our The Balancing Serum is ideal for summer — lightweight, fast-absorbing, and perfect for oily or combination skin in warmer months.

Hydration Is Everything

Heat and sun exposure accelerate water loss from the skin. Combat this from both inside and out:

  • Drink more water — aim for at least 2 litres a day, more if you're active or spending time in the sun
  • Use a hydrating facial mist throughout the day to refresh and replenish moisture
  • Look for hyaluronic acid in your serums — it holds up to 1,000 times its weight in water, keeping skin plump and dewy

After-Sun Care

Even with the best intentions, sun exposure happens. After a day outdoors, treat your skin to some extra care. A cool shower, followed by a generous application of a soothing, hydrating oil or balm, can help restore the skin's barrier and calm any inflammation.

Aloe vera, chamomile, and calendula are all wonderful after-sun ingredients — cooling, anti-inflammatory, and deeply nourishing. Our The Multitasking Balm is a brilliant after-sun companion — rich in organic shea and argan, it soothes and restores sun-exposed skin beautifully.
